Megastructure Thumbnails

Before they are detailed paintings, all my Megastructure work starts off as tiny rough thumbnails to work out composition. Here's some thumbs for the Ringworld, Space Elevator, Alderson Disk, Shkadov Thruster, Skyhook, the Bernal Sphere, Bishop Ring and The Gas Giant Refinery, Rungworld, Krasnikov Tube, Star Lifter & Nicoll-Dyson Laser.

Visit here to see the final detailed paintings...

Three Concept Progressions

Here's 3 progressions on 3 concept designs.

The first is one of my favorite concepts for V1 Interactive's game "Disintegration". First image is a simple 3d blockin to match perspective, the second is all the 3d elements, and the third is after I added the photo elements and hand painting in photoshop. A lot of fun working on this one!

The second, one my Inc The Robot. First is my photobash of the design, then a simple previs quality 3d model, then the untextured final model, then the textured model.

And finally, the Testudo spaceship. We have the silhouette sketch, a simple previs 3d model, a detail drawing, the untextured final model, the textured final model, and then a real life 3d print.

New Video: Using Details To Make Something Look Big

There are many techniques to make something look big. But this tutorial focuses on details, how you can make something look the correct size by the size of the details, and conversely, how you can ruin the illusion of scale using the wrong details.

Testudo Spaceship 3d print

My friend Lowell was kind enough to do a 3d print of my Testudo spaceship. Turned out great! May paint it one day, in the meantime, here's the grey one right off the printer.

Testudo Spaceship

Digital line drawing of the spaceship from my Testudo IP. This is the angle you'd see it most in the game, since it's a vertical scroller.

Throwback Thursday

This spaceship from a future book project seems to be a real fan favorite. The illustration has scored me 2 freelance TV jobs over the years. There was another variant of the ship with larger rear engines, which one of the two is your favorite?

New Video: Areas Of Visual Detail, Areas Of Visual Rest

In my Contrasts In Composition lesson, I discuss how you use different sorts of contrast to direct the eye around an image. One of those types of Contrast is "Contrast Of Detail". That tutorial is an overview of all the different types of contrast, but each type really deserves a deep dive, so this lesson will be a deeper look into "Contrast Of Detail", or another name for the same thing, "Areas Of Visual Detail and Areas Of Visual Rest".
