SoulburnScripts Updated Sept 26th 2018

Updated 10 older Maxscripts:

cameraFromPerspView: Added ability to place the newly created camera on a new layer.

cameraLensPackager: Fixed an issue where button tooltips wouldn't update properly.
groupWithPoint: Added ability to place the point at the lowest point instead of centered. This can be helpful when the object is sitting on the floor and you want to have the pivot point on the floor as well.
imagePlaneMaker: Layer is places the templates is now called "_imagePlaneMaker" so it appears at the top of the layer stack.
objectReplacer: Now you can keep your user properties as well when copying.
snapShoter: Newly create objects remain on the layer their original started on.
soulburnAssetLoader: Changed the name of the Environment layer to "_EnvSAL" so it always shows up at the top of the Alphabetical Layer list.
Fixed a bug that would crash the script if you tried loading some presets.
Fixed some code so the script now works with vray next.
Cameras are now placed in a "_Cams" layer.

Thanks to everyone for your support.

Half Moon Troop Transport

Rough spaceship painting. Tried to keep it rougher than my usual rough, but it's always just too temping to add more and more details and tweaks. Inspired by a tree hopper insect, the spaceships of star wars, and a half moon.

Smash Giant 2

A giant robot I designed for a short film code named "Smash" my wife is working on. The simple 3d model was passed to her to begin previs / layout, then I painted this concept of the final modeling and texturing of the robot over top of the lowres 3d model. When the film reaches a point where it'll need a final model, I'll replicate the concept in full 3d. Inspired by the original transformers, many older animes such as Mazinger Z, Gundam, Patlabor, and of course the more modern Pacific Rim.

"The Story Of Inc" Reviewed in ImagineFX Magazine

Thanks to ImagineFX magazine for the first book review of "The Story Of Inc". They gave it 4 out of 5 stars, saying it's "well produced" and "the high quality of the story absolutely matches the quality of the artwork". I've actually had a subscription to the magazine for years, as it always has lots of interviews with inspiring concept artists and tons of tutorials, so we're honored to be included in their 164th issue. Check out the magazine at your local bookstore, and grab a copy of the book if you haven't already:

Concept Art Course with Neil Blevins at the Sadie Valeri Atelier

For anyone who lives in or around the Bay Area, I will be teaching a course at the world-class Sadie Valeri Atelier on my process for making digital concept art. The 6 week class (once a week for 3 hours each) will focus on mixing simple 3d, photobashing, and hand paint techniques to make compelling digital imagery. There is 1 last slot open in my class of 12 students starting September 20th, so come join me, it's going to be tons of fun! And check out the other classes and workshops in traditional painting and drawing offered at the school, some fantastic courses to take. Hope to see you there!

Megastructure Logo

As some of you may have noticed, the Megastructures project now has a new logo, lovingly crafted by typography addict Susan Bradley (, with whom I had the pleasure of working at Pixar years ago. We were hoping to channel some of that 70s-80s scifi logo spirit, while still remaining modern.

As this project transitions from a personal art side project to full fledged book, expect to see others join the project as we move forward, and lots more news as the details of the book get worked out. In the meantime, thanks Susan for your awesome work on the logo!

Megastructures 11 Rungworld

A Rungworld is an orbital structure that links together several hundred McKendree Cylinders into a ring that resembles a bent ladder. The ring could float in space, surround a planet, or have a star at its centroid.

Unlike the Ringworld, spinning the entire structure for gravity wouldn't be necessary as each individual cylinder is spinning around its own axis to provide spin gravity to the cylinder's inhabitants. Cylinders could be added or removed from the overall ring as needed, the remaining cylinders would adjust their spacing to compensate.

Each cylinder could be a nation state, with wildly differing landscape and climate, even differing atmosphere if alien races were included. Fleets of spacecraft would travel between and trade goods with neighboring cylinders.

Incredibles 2

So Incredibles 2 came out this weekend (95% on rotten tomatoes!), and I wanted to say a few words. The first Incredibles was my first film at Pixar, and Incredibles 2 was my last film at Pixar, as I left in January after 16 years of service.

While I did a number of things on Incredibles 2, my biggest contribution was the giant drill vehicle the underminer uses. I helped design it, and then did 99% of the modeling and texturing of the vehicle, interior and exterior. While I don't have any specific stats, I seem to remember the modeling coming in somewhere in the couple of hundred thousand separate object mark, and the whole project took me 8 months to complete. Certainly the most challenging single model I have ever done, and I want to say huge thanks to Nathan Fariss, Josh West and Chris Burrows for basically handing me the vehicle and letting me do my thing. With all the pipes and rust, it was the perfect prop to end my Pixar career on.

Please go see this film, or if you've already seen it, please go see it again and again. Buy tickets and tell all your friends! I am proud of the film, proud of my team, and may Pixar continue to do the Incredible!

Oh No!

Oh no! What on earth has happened to Inc? You'll have to read the book to find out:

Bill Zahn modeled and textured the human model, then I replaced the hooded head with a photo of myself from the back (since we didn't have any hair on our 3d model), and then I made the robot and the environment was painted mostly in 2d.

Inc Alien Meeting 2

From "The Story Of Inc" Book project. A great example of a team effort, Gio Nakpil did the initial creature design, the final alien was modeled and textured by Mohammad Modarres, then I painted the environment, lit and composited the alien into the scene.

Megastructure 10: The Bishop Ring

A Bishop Ring is a space habitat similar to but much smaller than a Niven Ring. Instead of being centered around a star, it is orbiting a star or planet, thus has a much smaller diameter.

It was first proposed in 1997 by Forest Bishop of the Institute of Atomic Scale Engineering. The original proposal would have it be 1000 km in radius and 500 km in width, although other proportions would be possible.

The ring would spin to produce artificial gravity using centrifugal force, and would not need to be enclosed as is the case with other spinning space habitats, as it would be large enough for the atmosphere to stick to the surface through gravity and possibly an atmospheric retention wall.

By giving a tilt to its orbit, you could achieve a natural day and night cycle, or illumination could be achieved using mirrors or an artificial sun at its center.
