What's Coming in 2014

Hey everyone! First off, a big thanks to all of you for your encouragement and feedback in 2013, it was a tough year but in the end I was able to take off 3 months and finally got a chance to explore a few subjects that I've been meaning to put some focus on, from some new cg tools to a lot of education to a bunch of new artwork.

2014 is going to be a huge year. On the art front, I can now reveal that I'm working on my first book, it's going to be a visual development book on an IP I've been toying around with for a few years now. I'm also super lucky to have a number of artist friends helping out, including two who will be writing the script for the story, and then quite a number of visual artists who will be contributing artwork to the book. Expect finished paintings, 3d models, rough paintings, sketches, even a few traditional models as we explore the story and world of "Inc" (that's the codename, it used to be codenamed "One World Divided"). I've already got about 2 dozen new paintings ready, and have plans for dozens more. I'll post a teaser here and there, but for the most part I'm gonna keep it quiet so we can surprise you with the majority of the work once the book is ready. So even if you don't see tons of new artwork from me next year, I'm actually doing a lot and you can expect to see it all hopefully in 2015.

I'll also continue my educational plans with more youtube videos, as I continue to plus out the 20 stage process that I released this year on my educational page: http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/cg_education.htm Also hope to do a few more live workshops, so hopefully I'll have one in your area.

CG tool wise, I probably won't be too focused on my scripts this coming year, but I will continue providing bug fixes, and I'll be working behind the scenes to hopefully improve some of the stuff you're already using or will use in the future.

No Pixar film for me in 2014, as many of you know, "The Good Dinosaur" got pushed back 2 years from its original release date, so hopefully you'll see some of our work on that in 2015.

That's it, have a great last few days of 2013, hope your plans for 2014 go awesome, I'm hopeful 2014 will be fantastic, it's time to turn this thing around and explore some new territory. Cheers!

Soulburn 3D Education Page Updated Dec 16th 2013

Added a new lesson called Texture Baking: Baking Patterns To Use In An Incompatible Render, which shows off the new script I wrote texmapBaker and how to use it to take a material that uses the plugin WarpTexture, and bake the results so that it can be used inside mentalray.

SoulburnScripts Updated Dec 16th 2013

Max script update:

Updated a bunch of scripts:

texmapBaker: Fixed crash bug when a selected object was not geometry. In Vray turns GI off before rendering to speed up baking. Vray now baked multiple objects. Added tons of new features. For more info, follow along with this tutorial: http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/texture_baking_incompatible_renderer/texture_baking_incompatible_renderer.htm which goes over how to use the new features.
cameraMapGeminiRenderer: Now turns off lock viewport if on so it can properly render the necessary views.
materialMover:
Added Vray support.
sLib: Added sLibGetActiveMap.
SoulburnScriptsExtras: Added vrayLight. Added more info to the warning message that occurs when you don't have a necessary plugin installed.

Soulburn 3D Education Page Updated Dec 9th 2013

Heavily modified all of my Metal / Reflection related tutorials, so: Reflections and Highlights, Anisotropic Reflections In The Real World, Anisotropic Reflections In CG Software, Chrome Material, Brushed Metal Material, and Gold Material. All of these tutorials had been written awhile ago, back when the industry was still shifting from scanline techniques to raytracing, so since most of us today are using raytracers, it made sense to update them a bit and add extra examples for mentalray and Vray.

Soulburn 3D Education Page Updated Dec 6th 2013

Added a new material and accompanying tutorial called Dirty Rusty Decaled Painted Worn Metal. This is the same material I showed off at this year's CAVE conference / Autodesk University 2013, and it's the main material I use to shade anything that's metallic, painted and grungy (ie, almost all of my stuff), and it's all ready to be applied to your models. If you need a robot, a weapon, a guy in power armor, construction equipment, etc, and you want give it high quality texturing without the need to set up UVs, this is the material for you (Currently Max/Vray only).

Back From CAVE / AU 2013

And I'm back from the Cave Conference / Autodesk University 2013.

Had a great time, got to see Syd Mead, Neil Gaiman, John Cleese and Scott Robertson speak.

Got to see a ton of old friends and like Wayne Robson, Kim Lee, Jeff Mottle, Paul Hormis, and many more, and meet some new ones that I'd previously only spoken to on the net like Paul Neale, Chip Weatherman, Chris Murray, Nico Bauerschäfer, etc.

A huge thanks to Shawn Hendriks for inviting me.

And a huge thanks to everyone who came to my class. As usual, I spoke too fast, but otherwise people seemed to like it, asked lots of good questions, and made the whole experience fantastic.

Now the bad news, so I was told earlier that the talk were being recorded, turns out only a few (~10%) of the classes were being recorded, and mine wasn't one of them. So afraid no official adesk recording of my talk.

But I promise that the material will make its way onto my CG Education page in the near future. In fact, tune in tomorrow for a HUGE surprise, I'll be posting something very useful to my site and will write about it here (people who attended my talk already know what's coming). To be continued!

Make Time For Personal Art

Many of you know the story of Gareth Edwards. He was a visual effects artist who decided it was time for him to make his own movie. So he raised half a million dollars, shot the film ("Monsters") with a crew of 4 and 2 actors, did all the visual effects himself (some 250 shots), and rather than the result being some crappy B movie, the film was actually quite good. It got a theatrical release, and a ton of press.

Here's a little quote from Gareth that I love from a vfx podcast http://www.fxguide.com/quicktakes/fxpodcast-gareth-edwards-monsters/:

"Most people who are in this business who do visual effects for a living, they're in it really because they want to make movies, I'm pretty sure if you speak to anybody they don't want to be rotoscoping until they're 50 or 60, its like they're doing it as a stopgap so they can become film makers, or at least I know I did and my friends were like that in visual effects...visual effects people should all go make movies themselves...I'm not trying to put anyone out of business, I'm trying to create a new business, which is "lets all go make movies", this is why we're here."

Now to be fair, I do know some people who want to be rotoscoping at age 50-60, there's something about the process that gives them satisfaction. And that's fine. But for a lot of us, we got into doing film to express a little something of ourselves artistically. Maybe not as a director like Gareth (not all of us would make good directors), but as an Art Director / Production Designer, Director Of Photography, Editor, Writer, etc. The problem is if you're working on a big Hollywood film, the crew is that famous work pyramid, the jobs at the top are few, and the number of people gunning for them are many. And even those top jobs, you're beholden to whomever is giving you the money for the film, so you still probably don't have the freedom you'd have if you were working on a personal project.

So, as Gareth says, "lets all go make movies". Or at least find some method to express ourselves artistically, maybe a book, fine arts paintings, whatever.

I tend to think of things like this, there are 6 types of projects: Individual, Collaborative (small team), Collaborate (large team), then there's Personal projects and Service projects.

If you're working at a large visual effects company doing tentpole films, then chances are you are doing a Collaborate (large team) service project. Which is cool, you learn a ton about what makes an image successful from a large group of talented people. You also get something out of working with a big team, there's a social / work dynamic that can be a lot of fun. Your work is likely to be seen by a very large audience. You learn a thing or two about client interaction. And you may even get a chance to squeeze a little bit of your own artistic spin on things here and there.

But your experience shouldn't stop there. Make sure you're also doing some personal projects on the side when time permits. Either as an individual, or in small teams. I can't express how important it is to make sure that you have at least a little something that is almost completely yours, something where you get the final say on when it's finished and lookin good. It may not be commercially successful, but it's something you can point to and say "There's a whole ton of me in that project." And it will help you during the tough times working for other people when you're working on a project that just isn't your thing (a "Spanish pampers commercial" as we'd call them at Blur).

Technology has come a long way, and it's possible now to make more complex projects with fewer people. The really huge projects still and probably always will require an army to complete, but while you're enjoying the experience of being a part of that army, make sure you're also doing something on your own for your own artistic satisfaction. Let these two sides to your work feed off of each other, you'll be a stronger artist for it.

New Rough Painting "Alien Portrait 3"

Another new alien to end the week. Started from the same pic as my second alien, but went in a very different direction. This guy seems a little like a squashed pumpkin, so happy halloween!

Here's a quick step by step of the painting.

And here's a comparison of my second and third alien, and the photo they were both based on. Figured it was neat to see how the same photo can be taken in very different directions.

New Rough Painting "Alien Portrait 2"

Another photobooth alien head. These color schemes always remind me of Pascal Blanche, but it's good for me to explore more complimentary colors in my images, so things aren't always monotone.

And a step by step process pic:

New Rough Painting "Alien Portrait 1"

Teacher and designer Scott Robertson did this fun little experiment a number of years back where he used Photobooth and a webcam to capture in realtime interesting 3d shapes which he would then paint overtop creating alien heads. He'd use the mirror function in photobooth, distorting whatever object he took a picture of into something that could look like a head due to its symmetry. Anyways, recently got a new ipad, it had a copy of photobooth, and so I decided to try my hand at the technique. This guy started off as mostly my hand and also a cheap plastic dinosaur toy, and then I painted overtop in photoshop to reach my final alien head.

Here's a step by step, including the original photobooth photo:

Autodesk University / CAVE conference class will be recorded

Since many of you have asked, it turns out that my texturing presentation at this year's Autodesk University in Las Vegas will indeed be recorded and will be available for online viewing. Here's some samples of past year's classes:

http://au.autodesk.com/au-online/overview

Of course it's still better if you attend live, since you can ask me questions, and I'll be giving away posters and Gnomon DVDs, but if you live far way and can't attend, this will certainly be helpful.

Again, for those interested in attending, the conference takes place at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas Nevada running from December 1st to 4th. Registration is now open: http://autodeskcave.com/post/7#.UjHWaD-wV3E

I'm well on my way finishing off material for the class, I'll post some teaser images in the coming weeks.

SoulburnScripts Updated Sept 8th 2013

Max script update:

Updated 3 scripts, this is a big update for users of my BlendedBoxMap and BlendedCubeProjection Scripts:

blendedBoxMapMaker: Added better defaults for Angle Blend Threshold. Added better names for the maps the script creates. Cleaned up some code. Now you can rotate the different projections randomly, which can give you better results when you don't need your pattern to line up. Added a 6 sided projection CameraMapGemini mode, which produces better results on highly curved objects like spheres and cylinders. Now hooks up the crop of the maps to each other through wiring, so changing the crop of one map affects all maps equally.
blendedCubeProjectionMaker: Added better defaults for Angle Blend Threshold. Added better names for the maps the script creates. Cleaned up some code.
texmapPreview:
Added advanced vray support.

"In this intermediary class, Neil will show his pipeline for shading and texturing Environments, Props and Hard Surface Characters. Everything from Organic Plant Life to Buildings to Hard Surface Robots. These techniques can be used to texture any highres object, whether for vfx/animated films, video game cinematics, or even architectural work. Shaders will be discussed, as well as all of the available methods for applying textures to your models, and pattern creation methods from procedurals to hand painted textures to photo manipulation. Focus will be on efficiently shading thousands of individual objects without the need to spend a lot of time uv everything (although uving will get touched on). While the demo will be given using Autodesk 3dsmax / mudbox, Chaos Group's Vray and Adobe Photoshop, the principals discussed can be applied to your paint application and renderer of choice."

Other presenters at the conference include Syd Mead, Scott Robertson, Daniel Simon, Fred Ruff, Wayne Robson, Chris Landreth, Paule Neale, Jay Shuster, etc

Registration begins Thursday September 12th 2013, I'll post a link that day on where to register if you're interested in attending.

Hope to see some of you guys there. As an added bonus, I'll have a bunch of giveaways for all the people attending my class, including posters and a few random people will walk away with free copies of my gnomon DVD.

Any questions, feel free to ask!

Upcoming Shading and Texturing Workshop

Just wanted to mention I'll be doing a workshop at a large CG related event towards the end of the year (US based) on Shading and Texturing. I'll be starting where my Gnomon DVD left off, and then expanding on the subjects with lots of new techniques and a faster more streamlined pipeline. And of course you'll get to ask me a zillion questions in person. Once I have more details (where, when, cost, etc), and more info on exactly what I'll be showing off, I'll pass them along.

Health Update

Just a quick update to let people know that after almost 3 months my health has much improved. Almost feel back to my old self. :) That said, if I want to avoid similar situations in the future, I need to modify my life some, nothing super drastic, just the usual stuff like more exercise, healthier food, I've also gone back to meditating on a daily basis, and have started yoga among other new things. I also need to focus on doing the things that are most important to me, and let go of some of the things that are less important. I have a bad habit of trying to do it all, when the truth is that no one person can do it all. That said, making art and art education are things I do feel are important to me, so expect new stuff in the future! And thanks to all of the people who sent me such wonderful notes and well wishes, you guys and gals are great!

Monsters University Out Today

Today mark's the release of Pixar's "Monsters University". Didn't get the chance to work on this one, but I'm glad I don't work on them all, it lets me see at least a few of these films without having it all spoiled for me :) Go check it out, and I think you'll enjoy it.

Health Issues

Hey everyone, sorry I've been gone for like 2 months, I've been having some serious health issues that are going to warrant some major lifestyle changes. So I won't be as active on my blog/twitter/facebook as I'd like to be for the immediate future, but never fear, I will continue to post new stuff as I'm able to. Thanks for everyone's understanding, and I wish everyone the very best in health, it really is the basis for everything!

SoulburnScripts Updated May 3rd 2013

Max script update:

First off, new script pack has been checked in Max 2014 and everything works great.

1 New Script:

pFlowRemover: Even after deleting a PFlow Source object from your scene, you can sometimes end up with cruft nodes that are invisible to you, but exist in your scene, and can be viewed if you try and merge your current scene into a fresh scene. This scene flushes all of those nodes out of the scene. Also includes some tools for finding and printing out the nodes in case you need to delete them by hand.

Updated 2 scripts:

objectPainter: Added ability to limit random rotation to multiples of 90 degrees.
cornerEdgeToVertexMap:
Redid the interface. Can now select concave and convex edges separately. Colors can now be defined per edge type.
